The future of education is no longer just about what schools teach, but about how learning continues across school, self-learning, and work.

Young people have never had access to so much knowledge before entering a classroom. YouTube, online communities, and now AI allow them to learn almost anything, anywhere. That does not make school irrelevant. It makes its old role increasingly questionable. If information is everywhere, what should education actually prepare young people for?

School no longer owns knowledge

For most of modern history, school had something young people could not easily get anywhere else: access to knowledge. The teacher knew. The student listened. The textbook contained the information. The exam tested whether you remembered it. That system made sense when knowledge was scarce.

Today, a teenager curious about inflation, Photoshop, bicycle repair, app development, or the Roman Empire no longer has to wait until Monday morning. They search. They watch. They ask. They experiment. And when something doesn’t click, they turn to AI, asking it to explain the same concept in a different way, again and again, until it finally does.

This does not mean they know everything. Far from it. It means the relationship between the learner and the institution has fundamentally changed. School is no longer the only place where learning happens. It is one part of a much larger learning ecosystem.

The student can arrive before the lesson

This is one of the tensions I increasingly notice when I visit schools and universities. The architecture still often assumes that knowledge starts at the front of the classroom. But the student may already have explored the subject before arriving. That creates a strange mismatch.

School still tends to organize learning sequentially. First A, then B, then C. Digital learning works differently. A young person starts with the question that interests them, jumps between sources, watches a tutorial, asks a community, and comes back to the theory when they need it. One system moves at the speed of the curriculum. The other moves at the speed of curiosity.

I explore this contradiction in The Gen Z Shift. School did not become useless. It lost its monopoly. And that requires us to reconsider what we expect education to do.

AI makes answers cheap

AI accelerates this shift dramatically. A student can now receive an explanation, summary, translation, or example almost instantly. That sounds like an educational revolution. But there is a catch. Getting the answer is not the same as learning. The OECD’s 2026 Digital Education Outlook warns about exactly this distinction.

General-purpose generative AI can improve the quality of students’ immediate output without necessarily creating lasting learning. When cognitive work is simply outsourced to the machine, performance can increase while actual understanding does not.

That may become one of the defining challenges for education. AI can make a student look smarter before it actually makes them smarter. So perhaps the value of school is no longer primarily giving students answers. Perhaps it is teaching them what to do with answers.

Doubt may become more valuable than knowledge

This is where I think education has an enormous opportunity. If information becomes abundant, judgment becomes scarce. Which source deserves to be trusted? What is missing from an AI-generated answer? Who created the data? Which assumption sits underneath the argument? Can you defend an opinion when someone disagrees? Can you discover that you were wrong and change your position?

The European Commission and OECD launched an AI Literacy Framework for schools in June 2026 precisely because AI literacy is about far more than knowing how to write a prompt. Students need to understand, evaluate, and use AI responsibly. That requires critical thinking. It requires debate. It requires context. And sometimes it requires another human being sitting opposite you saying, “I don’t agree.” That kind of friction is difficult to download.

Soft skills are becoming hard skills

There is another paradox. As technology becomes more powerful, the abilities that distinguish humans become more important. Deloitte’s 2025 global survey of more than 23,000 Gen Zs and Millennials found that 86% of Gen Z respondents believe soft skills are important for their careers. At the same time, 74% believe generative AI will affect how they work in the near future. Communication. Empathy. Collaboration. Judgement. Leadership.

The ability to disagree without turning disagreement into conflict. We still call these “soft” skills. There is increasingly very little softness about them. If AI becomes capable of performing more technical and cognitive tasks, these human capabilities may become some of the hardest skills to replace. And school is one of the few environments where young people can still practice them at scale.

Education needs more contact with the world it prepares students for

There is another uncomfortable question. How closely does education align with the world young people will actually enter? This is not a criticism of teachers. Most teachers work within systems that change far more slowly than the environments outside them. Curricula take time to redesign. Institutions need stability. Technology does not wait. The result is an increasing speed gap.

Deloitte found that 24% of Gen Z respondents are concerned about whether higher-education curricula are relevant to the labor market, while 28% worry about the lack of practical experience. That does not mean education should simply become vocational training for whatever employers need this year. Education must remain broader than the labor market. But schools and universities cannot completely separate themselves from the world their students will enter either.

More interaction with professionals, real projects, changing technologies, and practical contexts could help bridge that gap. Theory remains essential. But theory becomes stronger when students understand where it meets reality.

The diploma is no longer the finish line

This brings us to the workplace. For a long time, we organized learning into clear phases. First, you studied. Then you graduated. Then you worked. The diploma marked the transition. That distinction increasingly makes little sense. Young people are already learning before and alongside formal education. Once they enter the workplace, learning accelerates again.

Deloitte found that 70% of Gen Z respondents develop skills to advance their careers at least weekly, while 67% also do so outside working hours. Even more strikingly, 88% value on-the-job learning and practical experience, and 86% want mentorship and guidance. This is not a generation that does not want to learn. It is a generation that no longer assumes learning belongs exclusively to an educational institution. That changes employers’ responsibilities, too.

Companies are becoming part of the education system

There is an old management question I still hear: Why should we invest heavily in developing young employees if they might leave? It reflects a model in which training was an investment paid back through long tenure. We train you for several years because you will stay with us for ten.

That equation is becoming harder to defend. Skills change too quickly. Careers are less linear. And employees increasingly move between organisations, projects and learning environments. McKinsey argues that learning and development in the AI era can no longer be treated as an occasional training program. Development increasingly needs to become part of the work itself, continuous, contextual and embedded in everyday workflows.

That requires a different mindset. The old model was: We train you because you will stay. The emerging model is: We train you because learning is part of the job. Even if that employee eventually leaves. Because the alternative is worse: having people who stay while their skills stop evolving.

Employers will receive a different kind of graduate

Companies also need to stop expecting schools to deliver exactly the same type of 22-year-old they received twenty years ago. Young graduates can arrive with surprising levels of knowledge about AI, digital tools, social platforms, and emerging culture.

At the same time, they may need more support around professional context, communication, decision-making, and the unwritten rules of organizations. That is not necessarily a failure. It is a different profile.

In The Gen Z Shift, I describe this generation as highly informed yet unevenly prepared. They have often accumulated knowledge horizontally through digital networks, while organizations still expect the traditional sequencing and professional codes that previous generations learned differently. If employers misunderstand that difference, they will spend their time complaining about young talent instead of developing it.

Learning no longer fits inside one institution

Perhaps this is the real shift. We still organise education as separate boxes. School, university, work, or training. But young people increasingly experience learning as a continuous flow among themselves. They learn from teachers. They learn from AI. They learn from colleagues. They learn from YouTube. They learn by failing.

They learn through side projects and communities. None of these should replace the others. The opportunity is to understand what each one does best. Schools can provide structure, critical thinking, context, and social learning.

Digital tools can provide speed, access, and personalization. Companies can provide experience, application, mentoring, and real consequences. The mistake is expecting one of them to do everything.

Conclusion: education needs to move from answers to judgment

School still matters. Perhaps more than ever. But not because young people need another place to access information. Information is everywhere. The real challenge is helping young people understand it, question it, structure it, challenge it, and apply it. And that process does not end when they receive a diploma. The diploma is no longer the finish line. It is one checkpoint in a learning journey that began long before university and will continue throughout working life. The future of education may therefore not be school versus self-learning versus work. It may be learning without borders between the three.

Yes, but its role is changing. When information and AI-generated answers are widely available, education becomes less valuable as a simple distributor of knowledge and more important for developing critical thinking, judgement, social skills, context and the ability to evaluate information.

Gen Z has grown up with access to search engines, video tutorials, online communities, and now generative AI. Formal education remains important, but young people increasingly combine it with self-directed, networked and practical learning outside the classroom.

There is no single answer across institutions, but Deloitte found that 24% of Gen Z respondents were concerned about the relevance of higher-education curricula to the job market and 28% about limited practical experience. Employers therefore increasingly have a role in continuing development after graduation.

Treat learning as part of work rather than something completed before employment. Younger workers strongly value mentoring, practical experience and continuous skills development. Companies should combine real responsibility with feedback, coaching, contextual guidance, and opportunities to learn while doing.
